Team Project

Since our group (Dunder Mifflin) has been working on the YMCA project it has been my great pleasure to have worked with, and gotten to know my team members; they are Garrett, Rob and Steven. We have had to modify our original ideas since we have first started and the group has came up with some great ideas. I would say that this has been the best thing about the group, the creativity. There have been a number of challenges form getting speedy responses from the client to deciding on how to design the layout and for me the technology gap. These have been overcome though and we have, or I feel, done well. Our group has gotten along well and this has been a learning experience for me that will carry over into the future. Overall I have enjoyed it and look forward to the final presentation.

Dual Coding

Its really amazing how we as humans remember things and after the class on dual coding I haven't forgot the ideas behind it. This was the first time that I was exposed to the ideas of memory retention and dual coding. This does make sence though and especially when last semester, I had to remember over 500 plant names of which most had two or three names. The Nike advertisement does a nice job of tying the atmosphere to their product. However I think that this would apply mostly to those who play a sport rather than those who merely wear the products in a noncompetitive environment. Those who play a sport and are involved in a gym or locker room can easily identify with this environment.

Miscommunication !?!?

Miscommunications are common in every work place but the one thing that can enhance miscommunications in my work place is noise. Working around equipment and trying to use direct connect phones can be a challenge all of its own. Sometimes mistaken are made and other times they are cought in time. Even if a error is made hopefully it isnt bad enought that a quick correction can't do the trick. One error that stands out in my mind is the time a crew working for my Dad was instructed to remove a deadtree from a thick stand of trees. It was dead but from the bottom it was hard to see which was dead or alive. Of course a live tree was cut down leaving the dead one standing. Needless to say our company paid for the removal of the dead tree as well as the live tree. Those types of mistakes are the ones to avoid.

Interview

I was actually looking forward to my interview time, I have been through this process before and I guess I felt a like I was ready. I wasnt really nervios, I just felt better once the process had begun. One question that I wasn't ready for was when Mrs. Angie asked if I had any questions for her. I didnt really know what to ask and then she told me to ask questions that had been given to me back to the interviewer. This would give the impression that I was interested in what was being asked and what the company was doing in relation to the question. If I could change anything about this interview, I would modify my resume then I would ask more questions of my own. This interview actually helped my self confidence and made me feel a little more comfortable about the interviewing process.

Presentations

The 3 presentations that I really enjoyed were by Rob Painter (October 3), Kate Becknell (Lemon Bars Recipe), and Shawn Corey (Officiating Triangle Style). Rob's presentation was interesting because I have always enjoyed those "in this date in history" and partly because I love history and also because sometimes really random things may have happened on any given date. Kates prensentation was enjoyable because she brought in samples of her recipe which is always a winner to me. Lastly Shawn's presentation was entertaining because he broke it down into numbers and facts which is, for someone who isnt a hardcore basketball fan like myself, easy to understand and appreciate.

Articles

I read the article entitled "The Best use of a Cover Letter" and I think that this was helpful for those who are going to write a cover letter. I know that early in my college career I was clueless as to what a cover letter was. This article ask you questions that you should ask yourself before typing a cover letter; such as what position do you want, and what interest you about the company. This keeps your focus on the company and on what you want in a job, rather than just sending out coverletters and resumes to just anyone hoping to make a match.

The Next Ten Years

I have thought about my future alot, and; after considering what I want, whats expected of me, and what my family wants I realize that I want nothing more than for Gods will to be done. Sure I have plenty of hopes and dreams but as I get older I realize that I will be happier living in Gods will, than trying to see that my selfish desires are meet. I hope that this includes marriage having a home and the continued (successful) operation of my parents landscape business. In my most distance dreams I would like to work in education maybe as a teacher or something like that I really don't know. I know that it will all work out if I stay strong in my faith.

Web Video

The title "the machine is us/ing us" appropriately fits the web video. As the web continually gets larger and more in depth so does our abilities to use it. It works for us but at the same time we work for it. Neither can survive without the other. For those of us who are preparing to enter the work force we can become more prepared for the future of the work force. However, those who are already in the work force will need to continually "update" themselves on this ever changing technology. When it says, "we have to rethinking everything" I think that means many things; but, what stands out to me is the web is just a huge mass of virtual information that can be organized in countless different ways and the way that it is done is what should be considered.
